Binnenkijken in het kleurrijke interieur van een levendig gezin

Looking inside the colorful interior of a lively family

In a cosy courtyard in Deventer, Mirjam lives with her husband and five children. The 1970s family home has been given a personal and colourful look thanks to Mirjam's passion for interiors.

Creating their own home

After moving in as tenants in 2009, Mirjam and her husband bought their home to make it completely to their own taste. ‘The house was outdated,’ Mirjam explains, ’but step by step we transformed it into a warm family home.’ Granol walls and mouldings were replaced by clean walls, fresh layers of paint and attractive furnishings. For their family of five children, aged 1.5 to 17, a practical layout was essential. The attic was converted into extra bedrooms with a dormer window for more space. ‘We have little storage space, so I keep stuff limited. Fortunately, everything fits in the cupboards,’ Mirjam says.

Calm base with colourful accents

Mirjam describes her interior design style as a calm base with room for colour. The white kitchen forms a neutral canvas, allowing her to easily vary accessories and paint colours. The pink wall by the kitchen is one of her favourite colour accents. ‘I paint the walls up to three times a year,’ she laughs. ‘I love to experiment, but right now I try to stick to beige and brown tones as a base.’

Pink corner sofa Kiva

One of the eye-catchers in the living room is pink corner sofa Kiva in the colour Sweet Blossom. ‘Our previous sofa was unfortunately beyond saving after an accident with sudo cream,’ Mirjam jokes. ‘Then I chose the pink Kiva because it matched perfectly with the rest of the interior. The fabric is wonderfully soft and resistant to our cats, which is really a plus.’ The sofa forms the heart of the living room and is a favourite spot for the whole family.

Inspiration and favourite items

Mirjam gets her interior design inspiration mainly from Instagram, Pinterest and from magazines. ‘I love home magazines and follow a lot of interior design accounts. I find connecting with others who share the same passion super fun.’ One of her favourite items is the big mirror, for which she has been saving for a long time. Tips from Mirjam

When it comes to interior design advice, Mirjam stresses the importance of using colour.

“I once combined pink, purple and lilac, but it looked like a Barbie house. Now I stick to two or three colors that go well together.”

Another tip: personalise your interior with treasured items. ‘Above the sofa is a box with treasured memories, a subtle detail that makes our home extra personal’. She also advises not to be impulsive when making big purchases.
